Check your car's visibility

Chicago Tribune -- Daylight savings time will soon end. The dreaded nighttime commute is nigh. Good vision is vital and the Car Care Council encourages all car owners to conduct a vehicle visibility safety check during National Headlight Safety Month in October before the time changes on November 1.

Here is a simple checklist of things you, or your mechanic, can do quickly and inexpensively:

-- Check your headlight brightness. Headlight bulbs dim over time. Park on a level surface facing five feet from a wall and check the light display. The circles of light should be bright or soft white, not yellow or dim, and the circles should be even.

Most of the article is common sense, but there is always a new generation of drivers that needs to be educated on the finer points.

Some folks are living in fast forward. We should do away with DST as it really doesn't help us anymore with the advancements in technology (e.g) LED, CFL, and energy saving appliances.

toothpaste works pretty good at removing the haze from headlight lenses - so does oil

Gone are the days of the simple sealed-beam headlight unit that could be bought from any service station or parts store for less than $10. (I do still have one vehicle that uses them.)

i was a vehicle inspector before we went out of business, and most people do not realize their headlights will grow dim with age..most of this article is spot on..
